Nobody wants to stop and re-tie their shoes every time they head out the door. The good news: with a moccasin, you don’t have to. The leather lace on our moccasins is there to fit the moccasin to your foot, not to be tied and untied every day. Set it once, tie it so it holds, and your moccasins slip on and off like a loafer.

How to Set Your Laces Once

  1. Put them on and snug them up. Slide your foot in and pull the lace until the collar sits comfortably around your foot – snug, not tight.
  2. Leave a little slack. Loosen the lace just enough that your heel can slide in and out without fighting the collar.
  3. Tie a square knot. A square knot lies flat and holds much better on a leather lace than a bow. Right over left, then left over right, and pull it snug. Tuck the ends inside the collar or wrap them around the lace so they stay put.

Wet the Lace So the Knot Holds

Leather laces can slowly work loose. To help the knot hold longer, dampen the lace with a little water before you tie it, then let it dry in place. As the leather dries, it sets into the shape of the knot and grips itself, so it stays tied far longer.

Give Them Time to Break In

A new pair should feel comfortably snug. Our moccasins run one size large, and the leather stretches and shapes to your foot over the first few weeks of wear. You may want to re-tie the lace once or twice during that time; after that, it rarely needs touching. (For more on how leather breaks in, see Will Moccasins Stretch Out?)

Which Styles Work Best?

  • Softsoles are the easiest to slip on – soft, flexible and made for around the house.
  • Canoesoles have a thick pigskin sole and a padded insole, great for kicking around the house or out on the patio.
  • Hardsoles have a crepe sole for wearing out and about. The collar holds its shape, so leave a little extra slack in the lace to make them easy to step into.
